Three distinct applications

Applications ArcToolbox, ArcCatalog, and ArcMap

Three new applications can work in the office environment (Windows NT)

ArcView: ArcToolbox, ArcCatalog, and ArcMap.
  • ArcToolbox:
ArcToolbox is the application for treating Blankets, Grids, TIN, using ...ARC commands ArcInfo Workstation.
  • ArcCatalog:
ArcCatalog is the application to manage, view and document your data sources.
  • ArcMap:
ArcMap is the central application in ArcGIS. It allows you to view, create, edit, analyze and
to present your spatial and attribute data.

Customize the interface:

All COM components are available to developers using a programming language COM such as Visual Basic, C ++, and J ++. You can use relatively simple customizations such as adding or removing buttons or tools different menus of the interface.
You can write macros or create more complex interfaces. The customization of ArcToolbox is very different.

This application is an ODE application (Open Development Environment) built with Visual Basic. You can customize the visible tools, add new tools, initiating AML (ARC Macro Language) or start new applications such as qu'ARCEDIT, ARC GRID, ArcCatalog or any DLL or executable.
Same If ArcToolbox is not fully COM, it is provided with reusable components providing Developers powerful processing tools.

ArcCatalog

Exploring your data: graphical or textual
Management and definition of your data
Definition and visualization of metadata.
ArcCatalog is the application for managing your data. The data catalog presents a set of connections to the workspace (local or network) in which the data is stored in different formats (blankets, grids, TINs, geodatabases, tables, shapefiles ...)
ArcCatalog provides the user with the functions of:
  •  Data manipulation (create, define, move, rename, ...)
  •  Consultation of data (display, query, ...)
  •  data documentation (metadata)

ArcMap

This application provides tools to:
Visualization/Edition/Query/Analysis/Layout/Report/Diagram

ArcMap is the central application ArcView. It can perform the following tasks:
  •  Visualize spatially and attribute data (Labelling, symbology, entities filtering, ...)
  •  Enter and update data (digitization of entities, attribute data input, capture features, work features, ....)
  •  Analyze and cross the different layers of information (query, selection, crossing, the creation of buffer zones, route calculation ...)
  •  Create a page set mapping to present the results

ArcToolbox

Conversion Tools: Tools /Assistants
Graphical Interface/ARC commands
Client-Server /geoprocessing

ArcToolbox is the application for treating Blankets, Grids, TIN, using ..ARC commands ArcInfo Workstation. It presents a set of over 100 conversion tools, processing, and analysis presented in the form of assistance. Defined tasks with these tools can Be run locally or on a geoprocessing server.
They can also be planned.

Getting Help

Using ArcView ™ Help
An online help system is an essential tool in your daily work with ArcGIS software.
Its many sections are easy to consult and guide you step by step in performing tasks specific. The aid also includes a glossary of terms used in ArcView and GIS.

Contextual help

To display the Help topic describing a button, a tool or a specific menu command, click contextual Help, then click the button, the tool or menu option you want.
Specific support for dialogs To access the help topic documenting a particular dialog box, press F1 after displaying the respective dialog.
