Software Customer / Server Software

What is ArcGIS?

ArcGIS is an easy system to meet different user needs. It includes client software (ArcView ™, ArcEditor ™, and ArcInfo ™ ArcExplorer ™) and server software (ArcSDE ™and ArcIMS ™).
Depending on user requirements, you can choose one or more components of ArcGIS.

With ArcView ™, ArcEditor ™, and ArcInfo ™, you can manage your data sources.
With ArcSDE ™ or ArcIMS ™, you share with other users. Only ArcEditor ™ and ArcInfo ™ offer tool modification of ArcSDE ™ data.
The ArcView ™ components, ArcEditor ™, and ArcInfo ™ are built on the same technology and are the subject of this course. ArcIMS and ArcSDE ™ ™ are each subject to a particular course.

ArcView

ArcView is a powerful geographic information system designed to provide you the solution for visualizing, query, analyze, and format your data. It provides interactive tools to explore, select, view, edit, analyze, classify and symbolize your data or to create automatically update or manage your metadata.
ArcView includes ArcCatalog, ArcMap, and a lighter version of ArcToolbox.
ArcView also allows you to browse or to automatically load geographic information available on the World Wide Web.
The File menu ArcView provides a direct connection to Geography Network (see the section entitled Handling spatial data).
Due to the use of COM technology (Component Object Model), it is possible to customize ArcView completely by building VBA macros (Visual Basics for Applications) provides with ArcView or by creating your own extensions in development environments such standards Visual Basic, C ++ or Delphi.
ArcView operates in accordance with all ArcGIS products including ArcSDE and ArcIMS.
It works with all new ArcView extensions such as Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst.
ArcPress and Geostatistical Analyst.

With ArcView you can:
  •  Explore, view and query your spatial data using a range of tools
  •  Edit ArcView shapefiles or personal geodatabases.
  •  Perform spatial analysis operations
  •  Create quality maps using tools or assistants.
  •  Conduct diagrams 2 or 3 dimensions
  •  Create and manage annotations
  •  Exchange of numerous data sources.

ArcEditor

ArcEditor is via GIS application. It groups more opportunities ArcView but has less ArcInfo. As its name suggests, ArcEditor adds interesting features for creating and updating data including data stored in ArcSDE.
ArcEditor has all the functionality of ArcView plus new opportunities for modifying and creating geodatabases. With ArcEditor, you can create and Update your databases (shapefiles, personal geodatabases, and ArcSDE geodatabases ) as well as their structure.
You can perform advanced editing on editing geodatabases such as adding or modifying the behavior of entities, relationships, and the rules.
Good Naturally, you have also a complete set of tools for creating cartographic and interrogation.

ArcInfo

ArcInfo is the most powerful and feature-rich ArcGIS family of products. In more functions provided by ArcView and ArcEditor, ArcInfo combines an ArcToolbox Application full and complete version of ArcInfo ™ Workstation (CRA ArcEdit, ARCPLOT, INFO, and ARC Macro Language).
ArcInfo is a complete GIS in the creation, update, query, of mapping and analysis.
Because ArcMap and ArcCatalog are developed with COM technology (Component Object Model) you can model the diversity and complexity of real-world objects and define rules behavior.

ArcInfo includes:
  •  A user-friendly Windows interface type.
  •  A client-server architecture.
  •  A powerful collection of geoprocessing tools for the realization of a large number of operations such as analysis of recovery or nearby.
  •  Opportunities update databases by multiple users.
  •  Full compatibility with all other products developed by ESRI.
  •  Strong data integration capabilities, such as the projection on the fly, the transformations, data conversions, and fifty functions IMPORT / EXPORT of data.
Note: You can not create or edit a cover with an ArcInfo license Desktop since version 8.3 of ArcGIS. Only ArcInfo Workstation can do.
